Rowfold Farm

Veitch Moir’s acquisition of Rowfold Farm in 2000 brought the Company back to farming after a gap of some thirty years. Rowfold Farm has a total area of some 170 acres of which between 140 and 150 are cultivated. The Arun River flows through the farm, dividing the land into northern and southern sections, and both the North River and the Slinfold stream run along the farm’s perimeter, the former to the North, the latter to the East. The Slinfold Stream includes a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and the Company has put in place a wide range of conservation measures on the Farm.

The main farm house, two antique barns and out buildings stand on top of a small hill near the centre of the southern section of the farm, with lovely views from northwest to southwest through East. The entrance to the farm is from beside the historic cricket pitch on Lyons Road in the centre of Slinfold village, which wraps around the southern borders of the land. Just North of the cricket pitch, and on the left side of the main farm road, is the main working barn complex of the farm.

This area currently comprises two large post war barns which are used for storage, the old Farm Office and Dairy, the old Granary and, on the right of the road, an old cattle hovel. This area, known as Newbuildings, is subject to planning application for conversion to modern agricultural buildings, to meet new regulations, and into offices. Some storage will remain. The aim of the conversion is two-fold. The first reason is to provide a much needed increase in the sustainability of the farm, and this is the over-riding requirement. The second is to make the old buildings more pleasing to the eye in a sensitive and appropriate way, to add to the aesthetic qualities of that part of the village.
